
This advanced course is designed for comedians who have already performed stand-up and are looking to refine their craft, develop a unique comedic voice, and take their careers to the next level. Through in-depth exploration of complex comedy techniques like misdirection, multi-layered humor, and strategic pacing, students will enhance their joke writing and performance skills. The class also focuses on career growth, from crafting a press kit to negotiating gigs, all while learning how to navigate controversial topics with sensitivity. Whether you’re refining your set, honing your stage presence, or preparing for bigger gigs, this course will provide the tools to elevate your comedy and achieve your professional goals.
Prerequisite: Must have performed stand-up comedy in front of an audience at least once. Open mic, gig, talent show: all count.
Classes take place Sundays from 4pm-6pm, March 2nd 2025 – April 20th 2025, with a class performance Thursday, April 24th at 7:30pm.
About the Teacher:
hbfromkc (aka HB) is a powerhouse comedian with over 15 years of experience in comedic writing and the entertainment industry. Starting her journey in musical theater and sketch comedy, she quickly discovered her love for improv before diving headfirst into stand-up comedy. With nearly a decade of stand-up experience under her belt, hbfromkc blends all of her comedic passions to create a unique, multifaceted style that resonates with audiences across the country.
Not only is she a beloved performer, but hbfromkc is a key player in the Kansas City comedy scene. She was a director of the inaugural Black Comedy Fest KC and has served on the board of the Fountain City Comedy Fest for three years to present. In addition to her festival work, she runs three monthly shows that she created herself: Smokes N Jokes, Shots N Giggles, and Picture Perfect. hbfromkc also organizes a monthly open mic, fostering community and providing a platform for emerging comics.
In 2019, hbfromkc took home the top prize at Girls Got Jokes in Atlanta, further cementing her place in the comedy world. She’s been a featured performer at KC Fringe Fest multiple times, and has performed extensively in both Kansas City and Atlanta, earning a reputation as one of the most dynamic and versatile comedians in the scene. Her passion for writing has always been at the forefront of her journey, even as a young child.
Currently, hbfromkc is working on an exciting e-book and an hour-long stand-up special titled Fall Risk. Always pushing the boundaries of comedy, she continues to entertain, empower, and inspire with her humor and bold perspective.
