OPEN JAM & OPEN MIC FAQ
What's the difference between the Open Jam and Open Mic?
The Open Jam is for improv comedy. The Open Mic is for stand-up comedy. Both are opportunities to get on stage, try something out, and have some fun.
What is improv comedy?
Improv is comedy made up on the spot! Performers create characters, scenes, and stories without a script, usually working together and building off each other's ideas.
Nobody knows what's going to happen, including the people on stage.
What is stand-up comedy?
Stand-up is one person, a microphone, and whatever they think is funny. Comedians perform jokes, tell stories, test new material, and generally try to make a room full of strangers laugh.
Do I need experience?
Nope! Whether it's your first time on stage or your five-hundredth, you're welcome here. Everybody starts somewhere.
How do I sign up?
Both events use a bucket sign-up! Starting at 7:30 PM, put your name in the bucket for whichever event you'd like to participate in.
Names are drawn randomly, so it's not first come, first served.
The Open Jam happens Out Front, and the Open Mic happens In The Back. Both start at 8 PM.
How much stage time do I get?
At the Open Mic, each comedian gets 4 minutes on stage.
At the Open Jam, participants generally get to play in one short-form improv game and one long-form improv set, depending on turnout.
We do our best to get everybody some stage time!
What's the difference between short-form and long-form improv?
Short-form improv is made up of quick games and scenes, usually with specific rules or challenges. Think Whose Line Is It Anyway?
Long-form improv gives performers more room to explore. Scenes, characters, and stories develop organically, often connecting in unexpected ways.
Can I do both the Open Jam and Open Mic?
Absolutely! You're welcome to put your name in both buckets. Just keep in mind that both events happen at the same time, so participating in both depends on when your name gets drawn.
Does it cost anything?
It's FREE to participate in either event!
If you're just coming to watch, admission is $5.
Can I just come watch?
Of course! You don't have to get on stage to enjoy the show. Come hang out, watch some comedy, and support the folks giving it a shot.
